Meteorologist, Environmental Geoscientist, Journalist & Author.
Two decades in front of the camera — live hurricane coverage, breaking weather, and the
field reporting that built the book.
Most meteorologists report the storm. Scott Withers has been swept into one — and lived to write the book.
Scott Withers is a four-time Emmy Award–winning broadcast meteorologist and journalist whose career spans the country’s biggest newsrooms, including CBS News Miami, ABC News, CNN, and Scripps News. He holds a Master of Science in Environmental Geosciences and a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from Mississippi State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from Syracuse University — a rare blend of hard science and storytelling that defines everything he puts on air and on the page.
On September 28, 2022, while reporting live in Fort Myers, Scott was caught in the catastrophic storm surge of Hurricane Ian and came within moments of drowning. That experience became Ian’s Surge — and reshaped his mission: to turn the science of severe weather into stories that move people to prepare, respond, and survive.
Today, based in Miami Beach, Scott writes and publishes through SWL Publishing, speaks on hurricanes and climate resilience, and reaches a growing audience across television and social platforms. His work bridges the gap between the forecast and the human stakes behind it.
From a first-person survival account to a children’s series that teaches storm safety, every title carries the same purpose: keep people ready for what the sky can do.
When Hurricane Ian made landfall as a monstrous Category 4, Scott Withers was reporting live as the water rose around him. Ian’s Surge is the harrowing, true-story account of those minutes — and a gripping look at the science, the warnings, and the human cost of one of the deadliest hurricanes in modern American history.
An award-winning picture-book series that teaches kids about severe weather and how to stay safe — starring a lovable dog who turns scary skies into teachable moments. A favorite of parents, teachers, and young storm-watchers.
